The Milk of Amnesia
Written and Co-Created by Danielle Janess
Directed and Co-Created by Ming Hudson
The Milk of Amnesia is a theatrical adaptation, based on the debut book of poetry of the same name written by Danielle Janess. Theatrical in concept, the book of poetry opens on a stage, where the story unfolds before the reader in five acts. Our work is focused on lifting the words off the page, to translate the poetry into physical performance. The Milk of Amnesia has a dreamlike quality, as though the past and our memories are behind a veil, just out of reach. The central figure, a young mother, reaches back to family, collective history, and cultural lore, in order to discover hidden parts of herself. With this production, we will create a place between past and present, between dream and reality. Our vision is interdisciplinary and multisensory: dance, live music, photography, and film work alongside the drama and poetry to convey character, narrative, atmosphere, and emotion.
